HM Queen Elizabeth II
There are a gazillion articles out relating to the Diamond Jubilee at the moment, so I'm just going to corral them all in one spot so you can clickety-click at your convenience. They're mostly picture galleries.
First up is a color (as opposed to the usual black and white snaps) flashback to Queen Elizabeth IIs coronation in 1953. Yes, they're counting right holding a Diamond Jubilee in 2012. George VI died in April 1952, but the coronation didn't take place until the following year because these things take time to get organized.
Then we have royal pictures that were discovered in some guy's attic. I wish I could discover stuff. Why are they always discovering stuff over there? Notice how in the after-coronation shot, the Queen Mother elbowed Prince Philip out of the way and stuck him in the second row so that she could be the most important after the queen. (I never did like the Queen Mum.)
This one is royal family home movies. Apparently there was a show last night on the BBC with these, and they got Prince Charles to watch and narrate. (I think it's weird that at his age he calls Queenie *my mama*.) Prince Philip as *Action Dad* cracks me up, careening donwhill in a red wagon in his kilt and pedaling on a kiddie bicycle along with Charles and Princess Anne. And Charles was soooo cute! What happened?
This is the part of the festivities I really wish I could go see, the Thames flotilla pageant set for tomorrow. Check out Queenie's ship! Shiiiny. This beats the heck out of any presidential inaugural parade pffft.
Then there's copious amounts of royal babies that have been born since the queen succeeded her father. You've probably never heard of most of them and would need a family tree to figure it out. It does let you know which are in line for the throne by tossing out their spot in queue. And who doesn't like to look at pix of babies? (well, maybe grump doesn't because he's grumpy like that) O, cultural translation before anyone gets their knickers in a twist, because though they speak English there, it's not always American English. *Nappy*=diaper in England. The DM is just trying to be cutesy with its *Nappy Notes*.
And look at the ginormous parties they're having over there to celebrate! How come we never have street parties in the US? How sad are we? This looks like fun! Well, OK, maybe not if you loathe your neighbors, but surely there's some other 'hood to which you could go where you might like a few peeps. Just for the chance to wear a tiara and all.
It's Derby Day! Queenie was hanging today at Epsom Downs. Pretty horses and a chance to critique royal fashion, you can't go wrong with this one. Phil wins for Coolest Top Hat amongst the gents. Beatrice is not wearing a toilet seat hat. Bad frock, though. Loving how Eugenie's shoes match her dress even if the dress is kind of meh. And she got in the spirit of things with her manicure. (I guess it was Kate's day off.) Scroll down for the lady in the cat hat. I so want the jester hat and the matching shades. But wait! There's more! DM threw in some cannon!
Finally, Big Ben's tower is getting a new name in honor of Queenie sitting on the throne for 60 years. (Can they do that to landmarks?)
More Diamond Jubilee than you could shake a stick at (were you so inclined to do so)....and it's only Day 1.
